Outwardly I looked clean, but on the inside, my heart was a muddy mess that still oozed pride and fury. If our sin isn’t dealt with at the core, it will grow out of control until it permeates our entire being, affecting our relationship with God.Īlthough I practiced self-control by not posting a comment, my heart was unrepentant. Jesus tells us that sin starts in the heart ( Matthew 15:18-19). In his prayer, David said, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me … For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. Scholars suggest this psalm was written by David after Nathan the prophet confronted David regarding his sins against Bathsheba and his murder of her husband, Uriah ( 2 Samuel 11-12). Then God brought to my mind a familiar passage of Scripture: Psalm 51. Satisfied with my good behavior, I mentally patted myself on the back for my ability to exert such excellent self-control.īut as I went about my day, my thoughts tormented me. Several retorts came to mind, but I ultimately decided it was better to do nothing in my furious state, so I shut off my phone and tossed it on the couch. With my thumbs poised over my phone's keyboard, I tried to devise a reply to let this person know their post was wrong. My heart also yearned to leave a witty comeback.
